Truth is often stranger than fiction, and sometimes it can be scarier too. Documenting the Witch Path (2017) is a horror documentary from Sweden that may catch you by surprise.

In the documentary, director Carl Sundström assembles a team to investigate a mysterious place known as Witch Lake. Their inquiries into the mysterious location lead to some weird conversations that make them wonder if something supernatural is going on…

You’re probably wondering if this is for real. I can assure you that this isn’t a fake documentary. This is nothing like Paranormal Activity (2007) or The Last Exorcism (2010). It actually exposes the truth in a unique and clever manner.

If I had to make a cinematic connection it would be to The Blair Witch Project (1999). That movie also deals with filmmakers lost in spooky forest, searching for a mysterious legend. Ironically, many people still believe it was a true story, but this one is the real deal.

The history behind Documenting the Witch Path goes back to 1675. At that time, the biggest witch trail to ever take place in Sweden was held at Torsåker Parish. A total of 71 people were found guilty of witchcraft. All of them were beheaded and burned…

I appreciated that creepy music was added to the film, even though that doesn’t usually happen with a documentary. The soundtrack by Robin Eriksson Franzén effectively set the mood and made the movie even more entertaining.

Documenting the Witch Path is also an award-winning film. It was named “Best Documentary” at the Independent Horror Movie Awards and at the Bloody Horror International Film Festival in 2017. Carl Sundström was also nominated for “Best Director” at the Independent Horror Movie Awards.

This documentary should definitely make your watch list. Documenting the Witch Path delivers a fantastic twist and a powerful message. The truth is out there…
