Wouldn’t it be cool to look like someone else? To be able to assume different forms? Like all things, it would probably come with a cost. Director Justin McConnell’s film Lifechanger (2018) shows us the ultimate price for that kind of power…
In the movie, a shapeshifter kills one person after another, assuming their identities each time. There is one constant that remains, his love for a woman named Julia. Can he somehow continue this relationship, even if she no longer recognizes him?
The movie presents us with an original and intriguing concept. Shapeshifting has certainly been seen before in horror films, but here it is presented with a new and fully developed mythology. There are rules and expectations, just like there are for vampires or werewolves.
The killer chameleon is defined by his quest to survive and his dark obsession with his former wife. So, even though different actors (sometimes of different genders) play the character, they are all easily identifiable as the shapeshifter to the audience. Narration keep things clear as well.
The transformations from one body to the next adds a lot of variety to the narrative. Each life is its own individual story, almost like a collection of short films with the same theme. It’s a little like Quantum Leap, but with a much darker objective in mind.
The film also boasts an impressive cast…
Lora Burke from Poor Agnes (2017)
Elitsa Bako from Antiviral (2012)
Steve Kasan from Blood Child (2017)
Bill Oberst Jr. from Atelophobia: Throes of a Monarch (2017)
Peter Higginson from A Night of Horror Volume 1 (2015)
Adam Buller from Galaxy of Horrors (2017)
Brian Quintero from Canswer (2015)
Ry Barrett from The Heretics (2017)
Michelle D’Alessandro Hatt from Until Death (2013)
Realistic blood and gore punctuate all the most violent scenes. The music by Sean Motley adds to the intensity of the film’s events and creates suspense when necessary. He also composed the score for Minutes Past Midnight (2016) and Blood, Sweat and Terrors (2018).
Lifechanger is the story of a murderous changeling who will gain your sympathy, despite his terrifying crimes. You’ll get behind him too, especially if you believe that people can change…
