Pigs have been a part of the horror movie landscape for quite some time. They’re not as big as sharks or snakes in the movies, but they get their share…
Daddy’s Deadly Darling (1972) gave us pigs that ate people, and Motel Hell (1980) introduced us to a chainsaw cannibal that wore a mask made out of a pig’s head.
Since then, there have been a lot of horror films featuring pigs including Pig Hunt (2008), Porkchop (2010) and Bullets of Justice (2017).
Following in this swine-honoured tradition is Hog Hunters (2017). Directed by Aaron K. Carter from Dead Kansas (2013), this short is currently showing at film festivals.
It is also part of a new horror anthology entitled An Hour to Kill (2018). The film is about two hitmen who literally have an hour to kill. To pass the time, they tell each other scary stories.
In Hog Hunters, a group of good old boys decide to leave bowling behind for a night of hogging. They have no idea how close they’re going to get to the real thing.
So, the basic premise is a little like Porky’s (1981), before it takes a big left turn into Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) territory. I just had to make a Porky’s reference…
The film is a horror-comedy along the lines of Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010). Even rednecks can be called to overcome monsters!
Cal Alexander plays Farmer Zed in a way that reminded me of Jordy Verrill from Creepshow (1982). He was both humorous and obnoxious at the same time.
Joe McQueen was likeable in the role of Lenny. He had a way about him that helped to redeem the other characters in the movie.
The music composed and performed by Anthony P. Robinson and Dolph Castrillo was very well done and suited the proceedings.
If you’re offended by bestiality, fat shaming, excessive drinking, and just a hint of racism, then this one isn’t for you. Though more people will likely see it just because of that description!
I look forward to seeing this short again when An Hour to Kill is released. Fans of fun indie flicks like The Killbillies (2002) will like this one too. Hog Hunters will make you squeal with delight…
