Horror movies are full of cryptic warnings. They often fall on deaf ears, leading to tragedy. “Beware the boy with the melted face” is one of those dark prophecies. The ill-fated characters of Cannibal Farm (2017) should have listened…

In the movie, a family goes on a camping trip with the hopes of putting aside their many differences. They go to a nearby farm for help, after what they believe to be an accident. A spiteful man and his deformed son live there, and they aren’t farming animals.

Cannibal Farm contains a lot of elements first seen in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). Both movies focus on cannibalism, crazy family members, brutal torture, and a masked maniac with a very specific power tool.

Even the last name of the psycho family is a tribute to Tobe Hooper’s film. Sammy Hansen is clearly named after Gunnar Hansen, the actor who originally portrayed Leatherface. There are many other similarities, but original moments soon outweigh them.

Starting with something so familiar allows for a few twists to come as an even bigger surprise for the unsuspecting viewer. That’s probably this movie’s greatest strength. It lulls you into thinking you know what’s going to happen, and then things change in unexpected ways.

Another big difference is that we’re meant to feel some sympathy for the killers in this movie. That’s something I never thought the Sawyer family from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II (1986) ever wanted or needed. Not even Leatherface…

Barrington De La Roche is brilliant in the role of Hunt Hansen. There are moments where it seems he’s doing a spot on impersonation of Jim Siedow as Drayton Sawyer. Then, he has a big dramatic moment that catches you totally off-guard. Very impressive…

The violence is often over the top, and the gore is very effectively done. Cannibal Farm might be a tough watch for anyone not accustomed to this level of intense horror. For the rest of us, it’s a blood-caked cannibal revenge film from hell! Don’t say I didn’t warn you…
